Mayor’s Youth Engagement Council for Climate Initiatives will present sustainability initiatives on May 16 at UTSA Downtown.
San Antonio, Texas (May 6, 2024) — The City of San Antonio Office of Sustainability and EcoRise present the 6th Annual San Antonio Student Innovation Showcase on May 16 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Downtown Campus Durango Building at 501 W. The Mayor’s Youth Engagement Council for Climate Initiatives (MYECCI) will present the work they have done this school year in collaboration with local organizations to engage communities in the City’s Climate Action and Adaption Plan (CAAP). This year’s council represents the fourth cohort of 31 local youths, representing each City Council district and 18 different public, private, and charter schools.
“These young people have immersed themselves in the complex challenges involving climate change, and I am excited that they are responding with their own innovative ideas,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “Their voices are important as we work to ensure our community and world are healthy and sustainable, and climate solutions are crucial for their generation.”
Twelve local student teams who were awarded EcoRise Eco-Audit Grants will also showcase their work. Each student group collected data in their school community, identified a sustainability issue, designed a solution, and received a grant from EcoRise to implement their solution.
“Youth are bringing their bright ideas to climate solutions at every level,” said EcoRise Co-Executive Director Jon Stott. “EcoRise is proud to provide these young leaders with resources to bring their ideas to life and a platform to share their impact at our regional showcases.”
MYECCI was established in 2020 to foster and include youth voices in the implementation of the City’s first Climate Action and Adaptation Plan.
