Overview

When Dedra Grant’s first graders learned that plastic doesn’t biodegrade and harms wildlife and the environment, they decided to see how much plastic their school uses and if there was a way to reduce it. They placed bins around their school and collected plastic bottles and cups for one week and found that in one year, their school would throw away an estimated 14,508 plastic items—most of which would be water bottles. They then applied for an Eco-Audit Grant to buy reusable water bottles for all the students and staff at their school. This effort will save an estimated 755 pounds of plastic bottle waste from going to the landfill each year!
